With a population of about 14,640 people, Durham offers culture and the quintessential beauty of a popular and ever-expanding New England community. The town has a total area of 24.8 square miles, of which 22.4 sq miles is land and 2.4 square miles is water, comprising 9.5 percent of the town. The highest point in Durham is Beech Hill, at 291 feet above sea level and located on the town's northern border. The most densely-populated portion of the town is its center, situated on the intersection of Route 108 and Main Street and includes the campus of the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

Durham is rich in history and natural beauty, situated beside Great Bay at the mouth of the Oyster River, Durham was originally called Oyster River Plantation. It was settled in 1635 as a part of Dover.

The Oyster River Cooperative School District serves the contiguous town communities of Durham, Lee, and Madbury, located 50 miles north of Boston in the southeast corner of New Hampshire.

The district is 12 miles west of Portsmouth and the Atlantic Ocean beaches, and 40 miles southeast of the White Mountains, offering four-season recreational activities and immediate proximity to the state’s Lakes Region. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is located in Durham. As a result of its geographical location, the district and its students have easy access to many cultural and educational opportunities.
